The ride to the trailhead was uneventful, with Cory in the lead and Ben trailing at a reasonable distance. As they drove uphill, a slight dusting of snow appeared, and the occasional cottonwood or maple tree, now showing fall colors, provided a colorful contrast to the monotonous green of the pines and pinon trees. They looked up the forest road and saw that it still seemed well maintained, although they knew nobody was taking care of it. The road was surrounded on both sides by thick stands of pine and low bushes between the trees. The forest was quite dense, and little light managed to get between the trees, creating a great number of dark areas in the woods.

An hour went by and the trip remained uneventful. They were chewing up the miles quickly, enjoying the scenery and the cool air of fall. They stopped at the trailhead and got out to stretch.

“Lord, it is beautiful here,” Cory said, sighing. “I hope someday to get back to normal and spend more time here in the forest. That would definitely make my day, or year, for that matter.”

“I know what you mean. I love it here, too. There’s something about the forest that seems to make your heartbeat slower and your senses sharper. Never understood why, though.”

Cory looked away and said, “this is where we met up so my family could go to the ranch.”

“I know. I got there the day before you did, and you thought I was Don. That was pretty funny.”

“Lord, that seems like two lifetimes ago.”

“Well, a lot has happened in the last six weeks. The whole world changed, and we had to change with it.”

“True,” Cory said. “So you still think I’m impulsive?”

“Somewhat. I think it’s more that you don’t seem to experience fear, and if you go through your life without ever feeling fear, you start to think of yourself as being invincible and you don’t think things through. I would say that’s a fair description. But it also makes you a good man to have around with the stuff hits the fan.”

“Thanks for that last bit,” Cory replied, voice filled with irony.

“Don wouldn’t say something like that unless he thought you needed to hear it. He admires your courage, but I think it scares him a little bit, too.”

“All right, let’s get going. We need to get to the cabin before sundown.” They started down the trail, Cory still in the lead, but at a more moderate speed, until they came to a switchback. Cory stopped and motioned for Ben to move up beside him. “This goes on for about a mile, then we flatten out for a bit, and then we enter another switchback after that. The cabin is about five miles from here, but we need to take it slow so the ATVs don’t get away from us as we descend.” Bud nodded his agreement and Cory again started downhill, with Bud trailing.

An hour later, Cory stopped at the mouth of a clearing.
